Almost 15 years before making history for his performance in "Lilies of the Field", Poitier made his feature film debut in "No Way Out", where he played a young doctor who faces racial discrimination from two white patients that he was assigned to treat.

From the time Poitier entered the entertainment industry, he constantly push past the color barrier, as he refused to play stereotypical roles that were normally given to African Americans.
